Please note all of our A Level courses must be studied as part of a full time A Level programme. You will choose 3 A level subjects to study over two years.
What is this course about?
You will develop an interest and enthusiasm for Biology, including an interest in further study and careers in Biology. This course includes the study of contemporary areas of Biology.
Why choose this course?
The Centre of Excellence in Science and Maths and The Mond Centre at Cronton has excellent Biology facilities. The staff are very experienced and have an enviable record of achieving outstanding results at A Level, 100% pass rate and 88% A* – C in the summer exams. The classes are small and friendly and individual and group tutorials are arranged to provide extra support.
Entry requirements:
A minimum of 3 x 5’s and 2 x 4’s at GCSE including a Grade 5 in English Language and a Grade 5 in Maths. Plus a Grade 6 in Biology or a Grade 6 in Trilogy Science.
What will this course lead on to?
Degrees in Biology, life sciences, medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and other medically related fields. Careers in research, ecology and biotechnology as well as those in teaching and in a variety of industries.
What will I learn on this course?
In the first year of your A Level Biology course you will learn about cells, the heart and respiratory systems, DNA, cells, biochemistry, natural selection and biodiversity. In the second year you will study ecology, biochemistry of photosynthesis and respiration, genetics, the nervous system, homeostasis, the kidneys and natural selection and evolution.
Enrichment Opportunities
All students visit Chester Zoo in the first year to help with their coursework investigation. A field trip to develop an interest in Ecology is offered as well as trips to the Natural History Museum in London and the Institute of Biotechnology. There is also the tomorrow’s scientist programme which is designed to develop skills in problem based learning, teamwork, leadership and public speaking. This will be of particular interest to those students who wish to do careers in medical science.
How will I be assessed?
For A Level Biology there are mock exams at the end of year and three exams at the end of the year 2. There are 12 compulsory practical tasks which will be assessed in the theory exams.
Are there any costs associated with this course?
All teaching resources are available on the college intranet. Student notes and work booklets will be given to all students. There is a one off payment of £25 at the start of the year which covers the cost of lab coat, all subject trips and resources.
