Modern Foreign Language Masterclass at Cronton
Cronton Students and pupils from local schools, Wade Deacon High School and The Grange School, recently participated in a lively and informative French and Spanish masterclass at the College.
The event welcomed internationally renowned speaker, Doctor Isabelle Vanderschelden from Manchester Metropolitan University, who delivered a talk on the benefits of understanding foreign languages. Isabelle also aimed to develop the students’ skills in reading film, not just through language, but through elements including camera angles, music and symbolism.
Doctor Vanderschelden encouraged students to prepare themselves for an increasingly globalised world, and to use languages and knowledge from other cultures to better understand the world in which they live. Isabelle finished the evening by entertaining French students with the short film ‘Un Bisou pour le Monde’.
Helen Chappell, Head of School for English and MFL said, “Our thanks go to Isabelle for giving up her time to visit Cronton Sixth Form and share her enthusiasm with our students, acting as a fantastic ambassador for MMU and for the learning of languages.”
Sylvie Laloyer, Subject Head for MFL and Lecturer in French, said “Many thanks to Isabelle for taking part in this event, and for promoting foreign language learning in schools, colleges and higher education. I hope that the masterclass will have encouraged more pupils to consider taking a foreign language at A Level, and also inspired our current A-level students to think about continuing their studies at University.”
