Please note all of our A Level subjects must be studied as part of a full-time A Level programme. You will choose 3 A level subjects to study over two years.
What is this course about?
You will develop the four key skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking that you started at GCSE as well as translation. You will also improve your ability to communicate effectively both in speaking and writing by studying, researching and discussing a range of exciting topics. These topics are centred around Spanish-speaking societies and their evolution over time in terms of social, cultural and historical events. You will gain a range of transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity.
In the first year, you will study a range of social issues and trends, aspects of the political and artistic culture of the countries where the language is spoken as well as the study of a literary text or a film. In the second year, you will study a further two major topics, the multicultural society and recent historical events, plus a literary text and a film.
Assessment is in three exams: 1. Listening, reading and translation (50%), written response, (20%) and speaking exam (30%).

Entry requirements:
A minimum of 3 x 5’s and 2 x 4’s at GCSE including a Grade 5 in English Language, Grade 5 in Maths, and a Grade 6 in Spanish.

Studying a Modern Foreign Language in today’s global economy can open a wide range of career opportunities to you. Many employers look for potential employees with language skills. At degree level, you can choose to study a pure language degree or combine it with a subject of your choice, for example, Business, History, Politics, Law, English and many more.
What will I learn on this course?
You will develop an interest in and enthusiasm for language learning. You will develop understanding of the language in a variety of contexts and genres, which will in turn enhance your understanding of English. You will learn how to communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in the language. You will also develop awareness and understanding of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of the countries where the language is spoken. You will also develop a range of transferable skills from debating to researching and in doing so you will gain in confidence and independence as a learner.
Enrichment Opportunities:
You may choose to participate in a vast range of enrichment activities whether they are related to foreign languages or not. You may sample taster sessions in other foreign languages, join a creative writing group or choir or if you are sporty, there is a range of teams you could join.
How will I be assessed?
Short grammar tests, written homework assignments (translations, listening and reading comprehension), timed essays, mock examinations (including speaking), group work and presentations.
Are there any costs associated with this course?
If you participate in any trips, for example, revision days, film study workshops or trips abroad, you will have to pay for your ticket and for transport.
Facilities:
A Level Spanish is taught in a dedicated computer suite and you will have access to Kerboodle, the online teaching and learning package, in college and at home.
