Why study this course at Cronton Sixth Form?
The Centre of Excellence in Science and Maths at Cronton has excellent Biology facilities. The staff are very experienced and have a fantastic record of achieving outstanding results at A Level. The classes are small and friendly. Individual and group tutorials are arranged to provide extra support.
What will I study?
Environmental Science focuses on the impact of human activity on our natural world including climate change, ecosystem damage and pollution. This area of science is evolving fast with local, national and global threats directly affecting the very existence of our world. A particular topic is around energy resources as the North West is undergoing a new Green Revolution with thousands of jobs coming to the region. Many students will study Environmental Science alongside Biology and Geography.
How will I be assessed?
100% Exams (2 papers at the end of the two-year programme)
Entry Requirements
A minimum of 3 x 5’s and 2 x 4’s at GCSE including a Grade 5 in English Language and a Grade 5 in Maths. Plus a Grade 6 in Biology or a Grade 6 in Trilogy Science.
Can I study this course if I have not taken it at GCSE?
As a core subject, all students will be expected to have studied Biology at GCSE level.
What can this course lead on to?
Degrees in Biology, life sciences, medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and other medically related fields. Careers in research, ecology and biotechnology as well as those in teaching and in a variety of industries.
Centre of Excellence in STEM
Cronton Sixth Form College has created a Centre of Excellence for Advanced Level Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths courses. This Centre of Excellence has been developed through the recruitment of some of the best teaching staff in the country, the building of our new state of the art IDEA Centre and science labs, and the expansion of our extra-curricular activities that support applications to the most prestigious universities.
Any additional costs?
All teaching resources are available on the college intranet. Student notes and work booklets will be given to all students. There is a one-off payment at the start of the year which covers the cost of a trip, guest speakers and resources.
Enrichment Opportunities
Students can enhance their college experience with super and extracurricular activities including, the Tomorrow’s Scientist Programme which is designed to develop skills in problem-based learning, teamwork, leadership, and public speaking. This will be of interest to students who wish to follow medical science careers. Students also have the opportunity to attend trips in their first year to help with their coursework investigation. Trips include Chester Zoo, the Natural History Museum in London, and the Institute of Biotechnology. Students will also visit universities, industry visits and Nuffield placements.

The IDEA Centre is a unique STEM facility which offers students innovative training facilities including an advanced manufacturing workshop, a digital and electronics suite, a metrology suite, a process control workshop, a health and fitness suite, a project management suite, meeting rooms, a 3D modelling suite and an Industry 4.0 suite which all prepare students for the Industry 4.0 trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies.
