Cronton Sixth Form and Riverside College came together to celebrate the wonderful achievements of their Vocational students over the past 12 months, at the annual ‘Vocational Student of the Year Awards’ ceremony.
Awards were presented on the night by senior college staff and guests who included The Worshipful the Mayor of Halton, Councillor Ged Philbin, the Mayoress, Ms Rosalin Wong, Chair of College Governors, Alan Bennett and College Governor, Councillor Tony McDermott.
Almost sixty awards were presented on the evening, celebrating the outstanding achievements of apprentices and students from each curriculum area at both colleges.
Special recognition went to four students who took home overall student of the year awards:
- ‘Work Experience Student of the Year’ went to Ryan Yeomans, age 17, from Widnes and previously a pupil at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic College. Ryan was chosen after showing 100% commitment to his work experience at Alco Design, having a great attitude and work ethic whilst there. Ryan has now joined them on their next project.
- ‘Overall Apprentice of the Year’ went to Ellis Mckeown, age 17, from Widnes and previously a pupil at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic College. Ellis secured an apprenticeship with local construction company LB Brickwork. He has developed into a skilled apprentice, which was further demonstrated by his performance at this year’s Northwest SkillBuild Competition when he received a prestigious bronze medal.
- ‘Overall Student of the Year at Cronton’ went to Joe Fletcher-Crimes, age 18, from St Helens and previously a pupil at St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School. Joe was selected after showing determination and resilience throughout his time at the College, even after suffering a broken leg during his studies. Joe has accepted a place at Salford University to study Aircraft Engineering and Pilot Studies.
- Overall Student of the Year at Kingsway went to Emma Blackall, age 19, from Liverpool and previously a pupil at Parklands High School. During her time at Riverside, Emma took on additional work experience in the field of Mental Health and has made a video called ‘Time to Change’ to raise awareness of the issue of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and its effects. Emma has also received commendation from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for her commitment to the community.
Principal Mary Murphy said “This year’s awards ceremony has been fantastic. We feel it is very important to celebrate the truly outstanding and inspiring efforts of our vocational students during their time with us. We wish our students every success as they now progress on to Higher Education and begin promising careers.”
Guests were entertained throughout the ceremony with musical performances by the talented students from the Centre of Excellence for Performing Arts. The students performed songs from their previous show Copacabana, and gave a sneak preview of their upcoming production, Miss Saigon which takes place on June 29th till July 1st.
