Royal Geographical Society Summer School for Cronton A Level Student
Cronton geography student Kate Rowland recently returned from a fantastic five day residential trip with the Royal Geographical Society.
Along with other members of her A level Geography class, Kate was invited to apply for the prestigious scheme by her geography tutor, Dan Adams. The written application to the Royal Geographical Society involved Kate explaining reasons why she should be chosen over and above the hundreds of other sixth form students across the country and how it would make a difference to both her current and future studies.
Kate’s application obviously made a great impression, as she was one of only sixteen students chosen to attend the Summer School from colleges and sixth forms throughout the UK. She was delighted when she received the email to say that she had been accepted. Kate explained, “I was really surprised but very proud to have been chosen for such a great opportunity and I am really grateful that Dan nominated me to apply”.
The summer school took place in August at the Cranedale Centre in Yorkshire and involved fieldwork, coastal study and human geography. As well as improving geographical skills and understanding, there were activities to increase confidence, independence, team working skills as well as opportunities to make new friends.
Kate said, “I have never done anything like this before and before I went was a bit nervous about traveling to the centre and then not knowing anyone when I got there, but I needn’t have worried as everyone was really nice and I soon made new friends and I am still in touch with some of them now.
“It was an amazing trip and we were able to put a lot of what I had learnt during my first year studying geography at college into practice, which has really helped my understanding and perspective of the subject. I hope to study geography at university and this trip will really enhance my university applications.”
