National A Level Reform – Information Evening for Parents
On the 9th April this year, the Department for Education announced that A Level qualifications would undergo significant reform with effect from September 2015.
The objective of the reform is to bring about changes which will make A level qualifications more rigorous and challenging in order to prepare young people better for the demands of employment and further study.
Changes include the withdrawal of modular exams and resits, and changes to the way AS qualifications count towards final grades and UCAS points for University. There will also be changes to course content in 13 subjects by 2015, and by 2017 all subject content will have changed.
As a result of this, it is now more important than ever that Year 11 pupils and their parents are fully informed of how an A level programme will be assessed, and that students choose the right A level subjects for the University course and career they wish to progress on to.
In order to support this, Cronton Sixth Form College is holding an A Level Parents information Evening on Tuesday 18th November from 6.30pm – 8pm to give parents more information so that they can support their son/daughter in making the right choices.
Halton Councillor Eddie Jones who has within his portfolio Employment, Learning and Skills said, “It is exceptionally important that young people and their parents have all the information they need when making these significant decisions about their future. I believe the College to be excellent at providing advice and guidance to students on choosing the right combinations of A level subjects and this is reflected in the success of their students, but as these qualifications become increasingly demanding the support young people receive at home is vital.
“I would urge any parents of young people who are thinking of A levels to go along to this evening so that they are well informed and can therefore offer support and understanding during their child’s time at sixth form.”
