‘Debating Matters’ to the Students at Cronton Sixth Form!
Cronton Sixth Form College recently had the privilege of hosting the Merseyside qualifying round of the ‘Debating Matters’ national debating competition.
Four passionate students from Cronton competed alongside other Colleges in the region to debate on a range of controversial topics including; artificial intelligence, political parties and medical data sharing.
Cronton Students Ethan Bartlett, Kieran Halford, Dominic Yearsley and Danielle Ellis, who are all studying their A Levels at the College, impressed the judges with their educated responses and arguments.
Chair of the event was Mr Kelvin Hall, an Economics & Politics graduate from the University of Leicester and a former competitor himself. Kelvin sat alongside a panel of highly qualified competition judges; Dr Duncan Casey and Dr Andrea Font, both Senior Lecturers at Liverpool John Moores University, Amanda Hancox, Series Producer at the BBC, Dr Cheryl Hudson, Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, and Ken Jones, Councillor at South Ribble Borough Council.
Ethan Bartlett, formerly of Rainhill High School, commented, “The competition is going to feed into my love of debating and discussing current political issues. I feel proud to be a part of Cronton’s debating team.”
Danielle Ellis, formerly of Sir Thomas Boteler Church of England High School, commented, “I love being able to process my own ideas and build upon that of others.
Cronton students debated against participants from Wirral Grammar School for Girls and Withington Girls’ School at the event. The team from Cronton performed extremely well and despite not winning the competition, Ethan Bartlett was identified as the best performing student by the judges.
Luke MacMahon commented, “The quality of debating was outstanding. The students responded well to the pressure and remained level headed throughout. As always, the students are a credit to the College.”
