Sporting success at the Liverpool Marathon for Cronton Sixth Form.
Students studying in the Extended Diploma in Public Services at Cronton Sixth Form had an early start on Sunday 14th October as they volunteered to man a water station and support four of their tutors who were running in the Liverpool Marathon.
The group were led by Chris Ellis, who had volunteered for the position of Drink Station Leader. Chris arrived on site at 07.15am on Sunday morning to take delivery of over 6000 bottles of water. He was then joined by the rest of the students to set up the water station.
The first runner came through at about 11.40am and then a constant stream of runners came past for the next 4 hours. The group were responsible for handing out water and offering encouragement to the runners as they passed the station, 23 ½ miles into the run.
Whilst the sun shone, and thousands of very weary runners streamed past, the students maintained a high level of enthusiasm and work ethic.
Public Services tutor, Ewan Martin, who organised the trip said, “I couldn’t have been prouder of the group. They were very loud and vocal in their support for all the runners, and having run the event last year I understand just how much of a boost that is, especially after 23 ½ miles. They were a credit to themselves and the college, every one of them should feel proud of their contribution to the event, it was a Sunday.”
Sally Cartwright, a tutor from the college who ran the event in support of Help 4 Heroes said “I could hear the students from round the corner as I approached the water station; they were amazing and really helped to spur me on”.
Adam Rudd, another tutor who ran the event said “I started to struggle at about mile 22 but the support from the students was amazing, really inspiring” and
Ben Barton, Head of Sport and Public Services, who also ran the event, said “I know I am biased but theirs was the best station on the whole route, they were the noisiest and it really encouraged all the runners”
Students who volunteered were, George McDowell, Ryan Shreeve, Hannah Shuker, Chris Barton, John Kearns, Rob Ward-Dutton, Lisa Cook, Scott Cuthbertson, Chris Ellis, Amy Wright, Matty Donnelly and Michael Sutton
