What is this course about?
The Technical Qualification (TQ) in Healthcare Science provides a broad insight into the healthcare profession and considers the skills and qualities required to work in a range of healthcare settings. These include hospitals, doctors’ surgeries and pharmacies. One of the great strengths of the T level is the integration of theory and practice as students have the opportunity to apply what they have learnt at College to their healthcare work placements. This exciting and innovative course in health provides you with a broad in sight and invaluable experience in a variety of different healthcare settings. These varied experiences enable you to develop professional skills, knowledge, skills and qualities to a high standard. An integral part of the course is attending placements within the NHS that offer the opportunity to develop skills further and relate theory to practice.

Entry Requirements:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9 – 4 which must include a Grade 4 in English Language and Maths and a Grade 5:5 in Science. Students must also have a clear DBS (please enquire at your interview).
What will this course lead on to?
You could progress onto a higher level of study such as a BA (Hons) degree in Adult & Children’s Nursing, Mental Health & Learning Disability Nursing as well as degrees in other allied health professions such as paramedics, radiography, operation department practitioner and occupational therapy etc
What will I learn on this course?
The course will enable you to develop the knowledge and skills required to work in a range of health-related professions, including Anatomy and Physiology, working within the health and science sector, principles of good scientific and clinical practice, core science concepts including the structure of cells, tissues and large molecules, genetics, microbiology and immunology they will also learn about topics specific to health, including understanding the healthcare sector, providing person-centred care and supporting health and wellbeing. There is a high level of science in this qualification and the Occupational Specialism is – Supporting the Adult Nursing Team. The placement experience will enable you to develop your practical and personal skills that you will need to be successful in your chosen career.
Enrichment Opportunities:
You will have the opportunity to visit universities to experience student life in taster days/week. Visit care environments, outside placement requirements, raise money for charity and guest speakers.
How will I be assessed?
Personal and professional development – this unit involves at least 315 hours of placement to be successfully completed in a range of health settings. Students must reflect on each experience using tutor and mentor reports and their own evaluations and produce a portfolio. some units will be externally assessed
Are there any costs associated with this course?
You will need to purchase a DBS, nurse’s tunic for practical work and a placement polo shirt.

Our fantastic new 2-bed ward with simulated patients and an accessible social care suite helps students to experience a real work environment. Our designated health science lab provides students with the opportunity to focus on the science units You will be able to carry out many practical elements of the course such as taking blood pressure, checking heart rates and pulse, and practice moving and handling.
