The Class of 2016 Honoured at Awards Evening
Former A Level students from Cronton Sixth Form returned on the 4th of January to receive awards honouring their fantastic achievements during their time at the college.
The annual celebration is a key event in the college calendar, allowing staff to praise the hard work of their former students and to hear about the exciting career paths they have now taken.
Leeann Bellfield, Head of Cronton Sixth Form, welcomed attending guests who included The Worshipful the Mayor of Halton Councillor Ged Philbin, friends and family of the students, and Susan L Smith, Head of Daresbury Laboratory and Director of ASTeC Science & Technology Facilities Council.
The winners from each curriculum area were invited on stage to be presented with awards by The Mayor of Halton. Over thirty individual awards were presented to the exceptional students who had gone above and beyond during their studies at Cronton.
Jordan Edwards, from Widnes, received three ‘student of the year’ awards for Textiles, Graphical Communications, and English Literature. She also received the John Collins Trophy for Contribution to College Community. The 20 year old was chosen for the four awards after standing out with her commitment and achievement in each of her A Level subjects. Jordan also played an integral part in the development of the student network committee, contributing to student quizzes, poetry readings, religious celebrations, creating resources, and raising money for charity. The talented student has now progressed to the University of Liverpool to study English Literature.
Michael Cooke, from Liverpool, received two awards on the evening. The outstanding 19 year old was presented with the ‘Mond Achievement Award’ and the top prize of ‘Overall Student of the Year’. The former Halewood Academy pupil was a key member of the college medical society, successfully completing independent research projects and obtaining a silver CREST award. Michael was also instrumental in the raising of over £1,200 for Multiple Sclerosis, and sought out and booked a large number of visiting speakers. Michael was an exemplary student who encouraged and motivated others. He has now progressed to the University of Leeds to study Medicine and Surgery.
Once the awards had been handed out, Susan L Smith delivered an inspirational talk to the audience, discussing her successful career journey and providing invaluable life advice for the students who have now began their studies at university or entered the working world.
Leeann Bellfield commented, “We were delighted to welcome back so many of our former students, who have now gone on to study at top universities across the country. The class of 2016 produced many outstanding students who performed exceptionally well in their summer exams, with the college achieving a 99.3% A Level pass rate and 77% high grades as a result. I would like to wish all of the students the very best of luck in the future.”
