What is this course about?
Students studying these qualifications will cover a broad range of subjects across the sector of Public Services industries such as Emergency Services, Armed Services, Local Authority, Custodial Services, the Criminal Justice sector as well as Voluntary and Charitable Organisations.
Learners will benefit from a large selection of Industry based employees coming to visit the college to speak to students and engage them in related activities.
Students may take part in a five day residential placement at an army base to help develop independent living skills, fitness and confidence levels and teamwork. Learners will participate in a variety of both land and water based activities which may include walking in Wales, Yorkshire and Cheshire, Mountain Biking, BMX biking, as well as local bouldering, climbing, kayaking and raft building.
In the final term learners will take part in an expedition locally where they will be assessed on map reading and compass work, camp craft, teamwork and leadership as well as improving their fitness levels.
Students will experience a wide variety of volunteering opportunities and benefit from our invaluable links with local and national public services. Visits from guest speakers will enhance their learning and future career opportunities.

This one year course is a great first step to a career in public services or the sport and leisure industry. The course provides a solid foundation of knowledge of Public Services and Sport. You will develop relevant skills and knowledge through a series of practical and work skills units. You also cover additional units such as fitness and exercise, an introduction to expedition skills, leadership and customer services. We have excellent industry links and you will benefit from the opportunity to go on industry visits as well as join in activities organised by guest speakers.
Our tutors have a wealth of experience and will fully support your progress on the course. In addition to your main qualification, you will also have the opportunity to gain a Citizenship qualification.
After completing this course students usually progress onto a level 2 course in either Public Services or Sport.
Entry Requirements:
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grades 9 – 2 including a Grade 2 in English Language.
What will this course lead on to?
The majority of our students progress onto the Level 2 Diploma.
There are also opportunities to apply for the armed forces or to seek employment within leisure centres, health clubs or sport coaching within the UK or abroad.
