What is this course about?
Students studying these qualifications will cover a broad range of subjects across the sector of Public Services industries such as Emergency Services, Armed Services, Local Authority, Custodial Services, the Criminal Justice sector as well as Voluntary and Charitable Organisations.
Learners will benefit from a large selection of industry based employees coming to visit the college to speak to students and engage them in related activities.
Students will need to undertake an Industry placement which may be residential, located across the Blue Light Services to help develop independent living skills, fitness, problem solving and building confidence levels and teamwork skills. Learners will participate in a variety of both land and water based activities including walking in Wales, Yorkshire and Cheshire, mountain Biking, BMX biking, as well as local bouldering, climbing, kayaking and raft building.
In the final term of the second year, learners will take part in three day expedition up in the Lake District being assessed on map reading and compass work, camp craft, teamwork and leadership as well as improving their fitness levels.
Students will experience a wide variety of volunteering opportunities and benefit from our invaluable links with local and national public and Blue Light Services. Visits from guest speakers will enhance their learning and future career opportunities.

Whether it be gaining employment in the Police Service , Fire Service, The Military, (The Army, Navy, Royal Marines, RAF) Prison Service, Ambulance Service or Customs and Excise, The NHS, Local Councils or the voluntary and charitable sector .
Alternatively, you may wish to go to university first to gain a degree before gaining entry to a public service on a graduate scheme. If this is the case, the Level 3 Extended Diploma (which is equivalent to three ‘A’ Levels) will give you the qualification you need to progress onto Higher Education. Many students each year choose to go to university to study degrees in a variety of disciplines including Criminology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Outdoor Pursuits, and Leadership in Police or Fire service studies.
During the course, you will gain a range of knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical study. You will develop key team working, leadership and problem solving skills and you will be continually assessed over the two years through a variety of assessment methods. You will improve your fitness levels and will benefit from exciting trips and visiting speakers. Our expert Public Services tutors will encourage you exceed your expectations and move a step closer to your ideal career.
What will my timetable look like?
You will be in College for 3 to 4 days a week. During that time you will spend time in gym and classrooms developing the theoretical and practical skills to equip you with knowledge required to work in the public service sector. You will be required to complete a work experience unit and carry out voluntary work.
You will also have a 1 hour tutorial session with your assigned Personal Tutor who will cover your tutorial times. This will support you in applying for UCAS, development of your CV and prepare you for the world of work. They will also help you manage your work load with an individual learning plan.
You will also spend time in the classroom learning the theory behind the subject and preparing for your assessments and working on your assignment briefs. You will spend 3 hours in Maths unless you have passed your GCSE already.
Entry Requirements:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grades 9 – 4 including a Grade 4 in English Language and Maths.
Are there any costs associated with the course?
You will need stationary and a pen drive. Uniformed Services/Sports kit (Details will be given out at enrolment) and you may wish to purchase Edexel BTEC Level 3 Public Services book 1 & 2.
What will this course lead on to?
Students can progress to university to study a variety of degrees. The Class of 2022 progressed on to degrees including Forensic Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Law and Criminal Justice and Politics and Philosophy and careers including, Merseyside Police, Cheshire Police, Royal Air Force, Prison Service, Nurse, British Army, Fire and Rescue Service, Royal Navy, Boarder Force and a Digital Forensic Investigator
