What is this course about?
This level 1 course provides a great opportunity for students to experience a wide-range of art & design activities based around exciting project themes. Students will follow exciting, creative assignments designed to build confidence and develop practical skills. The course also includes a comprehensive tutorial programme, which will encourage further independence outside the classroom and develop greater responsibility for learning. Trips and visits enhance study throughout the course.

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade 9 – 2 including English Language and an Art or Design related subject. If you have not taken an art related subject at GCSE you will be required to show a portfolio of work.
What will this course lead on to?
Successful completion of this course will enable students to progress to the Level 2 First Diploma in Art & Design course.
How will I be assessed?
The course units are delivered through exciting assignment briefs which simulate a ‘real-life’ experience of working in the creative industries. You will also work to briefs set by local industry or community organisations; this will enable you to receive real feedback from clients. Your practical project work will be assessed by yourself and your peers; it will then be graded by your tutors throughout your course and you will be given regular feedback to help you improve the standard of your work.
During the course you will be guided by friendly and supportive tutors who are all highly qualified and experienced in their specialist field – many of whom are also practicing artists and designers. As you work through a range of varied projects, you will learn the skills and techniques needed to succeed in a wide range of specialist subject areas. The units of study are as follows:
Explore Drawing, Explore Painting, Explore Printmaking, Explore Mixed Media, Explore and Create Surface Relief, Explore 3D Design Craft, Explore 3D Fine Art, An Accessory Project.
You will also follow a Personal Social Development qualification covering: Working Towards Goals, Healthy Living, Exploring the Impact of Diversity in Our Communities and Individual Rights and Responsibilities. In addition to studio-based work, a number of trips and visits to exhibitions and locations throughout the course will introduce you to the world of art and design and help to inspire your creative project work.
In addition to your art & design curriculum, you will have the opportunity to experience a variety of exciting enrichment activities across Crontons College’s wide-ranging facilities.
Are there any costs associated with this course?
In order to get the most out of your course of study, you are required to equip yourself with a basic art & design tools and materials. A kit-list provided at enrolment will itemise all of the necessary materials required, including painting and drawing equipment, sketchbooks and a portfolio. All items may be purchased from any good art shop.
