Level: 3 | Duration: 2 Years | Details: September | Exam Board: AQA
Please note all of our A Level courses must be studied as part of a full time A Level programme. You will choose 3 A Level subjects to study over two years.
What is this course about?
You will build on the methods and techniques met at GCSE and study new, exciting ideas. You will have three lessons per week with the same teacher. You will be given a comprehensive course booklet containing high quality notes and you will have access to the extensive range of materials on the college virtual learning.
Why choose this course?
A Level Maths has always been considered by employers as a great qualification to have. We have a committed passionate team in place and we understand the difficulties that students face when they first start A level work. The support and encouragement you will receive and the wealth of experience within the department will ensure you can achieve whatever you want to achieve.
Entry requirements:
A minimum of 3 x 5’s and 2 x 4’s at GCSE and a Grade 6 in Maths and a Grade 5 in English Language.
What will this course lead on to?
You could progress onto a variety of degree courses. Mathematics as a subject is very respected for training students to think clearly and solve problems. These qualities are highly valued by employers should you decide not to go into Higher Education. Some possible courses are BSc Hons degrees in Mathematics, Engineering, Science or Teaching. Following this, you could enter employment in the fields of engineering, science, research, teaching or financial services.
What will I learn on this course?
The course is for people who like solving problems! You will extend most of the ideas you have already met at school, such as surds and trigonometry, and make them more general and more useful. You will learn how to solve complex mathematical problems in the areas of algebra, geometry, mechanics, statistics and calculus. You will also meet some of the techniques classed as discrete maths. If you enjoyed your study of GCSE maths and you like a challenge then this is the perfect course for you.
Enrichment Opportunities
There are several opportunities to develop your mathematics outside of the classroom. Competitions both inside and outside college, visiting speakers to explain how maths is used in the ‘real’ world and a scheme to develop projects working as part of a team.
How will I be assessed?
You will complete 3 exams at the end of year 2.
Are there any costs associated with this course?
You need to bring along standard stationery, a set of files to store your work and a decent calculator. Please don’t spend too much money on a calculator. We will give details of the calculator we recommend when you enrol. All other course materials will be provided by the department.
Facilities
We have brand new modern teaching rooms which are spacious and inspiring. We also have a Moodle site which is populated with a range of resources to support your study of Maths outside the classroom.
